Safe and sound protocol
Occupational Therapy Services
what is ssp?
-
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a listening-based therapeutic intervention developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, based on his Polyvagal Theory. The program uses specially filtered music to gently stimulate the vagus nerve, helping the nervous system shift out of a state of stress or defensiveness and into one of safety and social connection.
-
The SSP helps the body and brain feel safe — the foundation for emotional regulation, attention, communication, and participation in daily life.

who would benefit from ssp?
Children and teens who have:
-
Difficulty with emotional regulation or frequent “fight, flight, or freeze” responses
-
Sound sensitivity or sensory over-responsivity
-
Anxiety, stress, or trauma-related symptoms
-
Attention, focus, or social engagement challenges
-
Sleep or digestion difficulties linked to nervous system dysregulation
how does it work?
● The SSP consists of five hours of specially modified music, delivered through headphones.
● The music is filtered to emphasize certain frequencies that are linked to the human voice, promoting a sense of safety and calm.
● Listening sessions are completed gradually and are paired with regulation supports such as movement, deep breathing, play, or sensory strategies.
● It is guided by a trained provider, such as an occupational therapist, who monitors responses and adjusts pacing as needed.
